a healthcare facility’s carbon footprint. “Anesthetic gases have been identified as contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions and scavenging systems are appearing in the marketplace as a means to capture waste gases and limit the off gassing into the environment,” she said. “Measuring supply chain impacts on greenhouse gas emissions is a way to bet- ter capture the impact and make the con- nection to purchasing and environmental impact.”

Beckler credits some vendors for initiat- ing sustainable products and processes “without the customer always pushing for them,” including disposal and recycling recommendations for a cradle-to-grave approach. Total cost of ownership represents one of the newer trends in sustainability purchas- ing decisions, according to Boothe. “The purchaser has an opportunity to engage in understanding the cost beyond price of ev- ery product,” he said. “There is an impact to use that is financial, environmental and social. The value of that impact is a reflec- tion of the purchase, but few purchasers

think about this system when making a purchasing decision. The ones who do are gold for their facilities. That bigger picture perspective provides valuable total cost management for the healthcare system.” Davis urged Supply Chain to leverage its massive scale to make a difference. “This means supply chain professionals can wield tremendous influence globally in reducing the environmental impacts of healthcare,” she noted. “Ecolabels are a noteworthy sustain- ability trend that have moved into the mainstream,” Davis continued. “A hospi- tal can buy Marine Stewardship Council- certified fish, GreenSeal floor cleaner, and Forest Stewardship Council paper products through their existing suppliers. Another trend is expansion of reprocessed devices, instruments and supplies — these resources are heavily regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, divert waste from landfills, and typically help organizations to lower their supply costs which, in turn, may help control the cost of health care. Increased use of Lean principles, like the [Virginia Mason

Production System, which is based on the Toyota Production System], is another key trend emerging among supply chain leaders. By using VMPS principles, we are proving that the pathway to higher quality and safer care is the same pathway to lower cost.”

However, several sources told HPN that GPOs and hospitals struggle with getting suppliers to provide line-item detail about their products’ sustainable attributes to assist providers in pursuing environmentally preferable purchasing strategies and tactics. Beckler acknowledged the struggle as one where suppliers must educate them- selves on current standards and questions providers may have. “We as customers and consumers need to help identify and educate our vendors about our needs,” he said. “The progressive vendors are work- ing with the national and international groups that are setting the standards and adjusting the outcomes to support proper standards and practices. We need to work with our GPOs and vendors about accept- able standards and practices.” HPN

Introducing the Aquasonic® small size, huge convenience.

100 Single Use Packette...

The benefits of single use packs are many. They’re convenient, easy to use, reduce waste of product and labor, and eliminate the risk of cross contamination. But, shouldn’t a single use pack provide high quality ultrasound gel too?

Current single use packs tout all of these benefits, except one... matching the quality and reliability of Aquasonic 100. And since those other gels quickly dry out, they lose their convenience as well as any cost effectiveness.

That’s until now. We are extremely proud of Aquasonic 100 and knowyou’ll be happy with the performance of our new Single Use Packette.
