investment in instruments, as well as re- ducing ongoing maintenance and repair costs. Instead you pay each time you use the set, helping not only to manage your costs but also your inventory. This avoided capital expenditure can then be used to purchase the latest in surgical technology to help keep the surgeons happy.” Reprocessed devices are another option that can help reduce costs. Through a part- nership with Sterilmed, Ethicon’s Energy program offers customers a mix of both new and reprocessed HARMONIC devices, while a Trocar program combines both new and reprocessed ENDOPATH XCEL Trocars in one sales unit to help hospitals keep access to innovation, manage inven-

“In terms of protecting the hospital’s bottom line, one vital consideration is how to best incorporate reusable technologies into surgical practice,” said Jaffy Marx, KARL STORZ. “A number of recent studies suggest that, although minimally invasive surgical procedures appear to be growing far more rapidly than traditional surgery, an increased reliance on disposable surgical products are often found to severely impact hospital margins.”

“And, while reprocessing has been shown to be capable of reducing opera- tional expenses by 40%, a fully reusable device can save 70% in operational expense — while also being a sustainable technol- ogy that can help reduce hospital waste.

It is also largely a fixed expense, which means that with each additional procedure performed there is a positive effect on the hospital’s bottom line.” “Additionally, disposable devices can tie up an enormous amount of cash, an enor- mous amount of your space and divert an enormous amount of the OR team’s time to manage inventory,” Jaffy Marx continued. “There is a time and place for disposables, but there are reusable technologies that enable hospitals to achieve maximum financial impact with minimum change.” “For example, we worked with one hospital that converted a single category of laparoscopic procedure from using disposable trocars to our reusable alterna- tive. With that one change, they saved over $20,000 in the first year. Their next step is to convert all laparoscopic procedures to reus- able trocars and anticipate saving $200,000 a year. We’ve worked in a similar fashion with other facilities that reported savings of this size in endoscopic sinus surgery, neurosurgery, and others.” HPN
